Focusing on the era of longevity and discussing the integration of medical and elderly care, the Academic Conference on Geriatric Innovation and High-Quality Development of Integrated Medical and Elderly Care was held in Chengdu

On the afternoon of December 26, Sichuan Taikang Hospital successfully hosted the “Academic Conference on Geriatric Innovation and High-Quality Development of Integrated Medical and Elderly Care in the Era of Longevity” in Chengdu. This conference actively aligned with the national “Healthy China” strategy and the policy initiatives aimed at proactively addressing population aging. Centered around the global trend and significant social context of the “Era of Longevity,” it featured in-depth discussions on scientific and technological advancements, innovative models in geriatrics, and the enhancement of integrated medical and elderly care services.

Experts, scholars, representatives from medical institutions, and industry peers from West China Hospital of Sichuan University, Chengdu Eighth People's Hospital, Chinese Medicine Hospital of Chenghua Chengdu, Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University, Taikang Xianlin Drum Tower Hospital, and Sichuan Taikang Hospital were invited to this conference to engage in in-depth discussions on topics such as the latest advancements in geriatrics and the development of an integrated medical and elderly care service system.

Zhao Yongheng, the Executive President of Sichuan Taikang Hospital, attended the opening ceremony and gave a speech. He began by warmly welcoming the experts and scholars in attendance, noting that population aging is a significant global challenge. President Zhao emphasized that while the era of increased longevity presents opportunities, it also imposes greater demands on geriatric services and integrated models of medical and elderly care. Sichuan Taikang Hospital, as a medical institution specializing in geriatrics, is dedicated to establishing a comprehensive service system. He hoped this conference would act as a bridge to address the challenges and issues in elderly health services through innovation and integration, enabling seniors to enjoy a high-quality and dignified later life.

Focusing on the age of longevity to collaboratively explore new development paths

The academic session followed a format of “Keynote Presentation + Roundtable Discussion” to foster a seamless blend of academic insights and practical exploration. The opening ceremony and the first half of the academic conference were led by Zhou Yunling, the Medical Director of Sichuan Taikang Hospital.

Dong Biyong, Director of the National Clinical Research Center for Geriatrics at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, delivered a keynote presentation titled “The Innovative Development Path and Practical Exploration of Geriatrics in the Era of Longevity.” She highlighted that as life expectancy rises, geriatrics is evolving from traditional disease treatment to comprehensive health management throughout one's life. This shift necessitates the development of a scenario-based health service system for the elderly.

Zhu Bin, Vice President of Chengdu Eighth People's Hospital, provided an in-depth analysis of the “Connotation Construction of Integrated Medical and Elderly Care Institutions” based on practical experience. He highlighted the fundamental role of infrastructure and resource allocation in driving high-quality development in the integration of medical and elderly care from multiple perspectives.

Zhang Nie, the Party Branch Secretary of the Chinese Medicine Hospital in Chenghua, Chengdu, and Director of the Kang Sui Elderly Care Center, provided an in-depth explanation on “Empowering with Standards to Promote High-Quality Development of Medical and Elderly Services.” He discussed how, in the context of actively addressing the challenges of an aging population, the standardization system can genuinely serve as the “solid foundation” for the high-quality development of elderly care services, thus ensuring a reliable framework for achieving the vision of “care for the elderly and peaceful aging.”

The first roundtable discussion focused on the “Future Development Trends of Integration of Medical and Elderly Care” and was hosted by Yang Mi, Director of the Department of Neurology at Sichuan Taikang Hospital; Zhu Bin, Vice President of Chengdu Eighth People's Hospital; Zhang Nie, Party Branch Secretary of the Chinese Medicine Hospital of Chenghua Chengdu/Director of Kang Sui Elderly Care Center; Li Hongyan, Director of the Special Needs Ward at Chengdu BOE Hospital; and Wang Chuandong, Deputy Chief Physician at Chengdu Tianfu New Area Heyang Gulean Geriatric Hospital. Based on the content of the first-half reports, they conducted in-depth discussions on core issues such as the exploration of innovative models, policy support pathways, and service system construction for the integration of medical and elderly care, contributing new ideas to promote the high-quality development of future integrated medical and elderly care services.

In the second half of the academic conference, Liu Rong, Director of the Department of Geriatrics at Sichuan Taikang Hospital, served as the host, focusing on core topics such as Geriatric Clinical Practice, service system construction, and multidisciplinary collaboration, to jointly explore the development path of elderly health services in the era of longevity.

Zhou Yunling, drawing on the practical experience of Sichuan Taikang Hospital, presented a comprehensive summary in her report titled “The Practice and Future Prospects of Geriatric Development at Sichuan Taikang Hospital.” Her report highlighted the hospital's approach to functional positioning, professional structuring, resource integration, innovative work models, MDT team development, and the seamless integration of medical and elderly care services. Additionally, she shared future plans for advancing geriatrics and further enhancing the integration of medical and elderly care at Sichuan Taikang Hospital.

Zhan Zhao, Chief Physician of the Department of Geriatrics at Taikang Xianlin Drum Tower Hospital, delivered a reort on “The Paradigm Shift in Geriatric Medicine from the Perspective of Respiratory Diseases in the Elderly.” Using respiratory diseases in the elderly as a starting point, he delved into the shift in elderly disease management from a traditional model to a comprehensive, personalized, and preventive model, providing new insights for clinical practice.

Su Na, Chief Pharmacist of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy (Pharmacy Department) at West China Hospital of Sichuan University, provided a systematic explanation on the topic of “Medication Therapy Management for Patients with Postmenopausal Osteoporosis in the Elderly.” From a pharmaceutical perspective, she deeply analyzed the rational medication strategy for elderly patients and the osteoporosis risk prevention and control system, offering a multi-dimensional pharmaceutical intervention pathway to improve bone health in the elderly.

Jiang Hua, Director of the Geriatrics Department at the Affiliated Hospital of Chengdu University, delivered a presentation titled “Geriatrics and the Construction of the Elderly Health Service System.” He systematically elaborated on the current development status and future direction of the Elderly Health Service System, emphasizing the key role of the geriatric medicine discipline system in improving the health of the elderly amidst the trend of population aging.

The second roundtable forum, moderated by Wang Tao, Director of the Critical Care Medicine Department at Sichuan Taikang Hospital, centered on the theme of “Building and Developing the Geriatric Medicine Discipline.” Participants included Li Kainan, Director of the Orthopedics Department at Sichuan Taikang Hospital; Li Xiangkui, Deputy Director of the Anesthesiology and Surgery Center and Director of the Pain Department at Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences · Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital; Su Na, Chief Pharmacist at West China Hospital of Sichuan University; and Zhan Zhao, Chief Physician of the Geriatrics Department at Taikang Xianlin Drum Tower Hospital. Together, they explored topics such as disciplinary positioning, talent cultivation, and multidisciplinary collaboration, aiming to build consensus for the sustainable development of geriatric medicine.

During the conference's closing session, Zhou Yunling delivered a thorough review of the event's accomplishments. She emphasized that the conference has consistently advanced innovation in geriatrics and the integration of medical and elderly care services, which is deeply significant for human health and well-being. She also expressed her gratitude to the colleagues in attendance for their academic contributions and active participation.

With the arrival of the "Era of Longevity," solely relying on medical services is no longer enough to address the increasingly diverse health needs of the elderly. This conference assembled an impressive roster of speakers, delivered a series of captivating presentations, and highlighted remarkable practical advancements in the field of geriatrics.
